Google Taking on the Mobile Web

6:53 AM in SEO by admin

Mobile WebIt is surprising to know that after all the talk on the significance of mobile apps and smartphones today, Google still doesn’t have a library of apps. Google still lacks native apps for popular platforms like Blackberry, iOS, Windows Phone and Android. This is sort of the heard of the industry-wide conflict between apps and mobile web. Apple wants to have an app-centric world mainly because it results to 30% of app sales. On the other hand, Google is on the other side wherein they want a mobile Web-centric world because this is basically where search happens.

A Closer Look at Apps vs. Mobile Web
Most experts believe that there really isn’t a war and the two are equally important today. So the question comes down to which platform product developers should develop for first. According to comScore, app and mobile web use is almost the same. However, it is a fact that mobile app development has recently been receiving much greater attention and resources. For developers, there is simply greater functionality in smartphone SDKs. Also, for users, there is a better environment for the discovery of apps.

On the other side of the equation, mobile web is very much like the early desktop web wherein content is usually not optimized and very difficult to reach. However, optimization has recently become a must with already over 21% of Google advertisers that have optimized sites. Aside from lack of content, another important factor for users is the process of searching using a mobile browser.

Basically, it is a fact that apps will be staying for a long while. However, there will probably be more growth in terms of development of mobile websites in the coming years. In the past months alone, we’ve seen this from Wine.com and OpenTable. The current standard is having less to do with tech leaders thus the shift to web apps is more a result of economics. It’s much cheaper for developers to create and maintain a mobile website compared to an app. Another benefit is that it is available to all phones with a mobile browser instead of the fragmented OS scene.

Conclusion
In the comings years, more mobile websites will be created. There is a lot on the line for Google since they are on top and every other search engine is targeting them. This is why they should not just focus on one aspect and come up with an answer for just about anything including apps.
