Bogus Patents. That is what David Drummond, Google’s Chief Legal Officer, is accusing its rivals. Apple, Microsoft and Oracle are said to be holding “a hostile, organized campaign against Android”. Of course, this is quite a heavy accusation. But coming from the Senior Vice President of Google, it isn’t so surprising to hear that.

Google’s Apple, Microsoft and OracleIn the official blog of Google, Drummond posted that the three rival companies are conniving to form an attempt to “strangle” Android, as he put it. He said that the Apple, Microsoft and Oracle are using the patent law to shut Android down. According to Drummond, the three big companies are doing this because they cannot compete with the success of Android as it is in its momentum as of the moment. To prove his point, Drummond added that Android has 550,000 daily activations, a number which according to him is threatening to the other three, therefore making Android a lot more expensive which makes it harder for the customers and even the hardware makers.

Drummond’s accusations may have had basis. Microsoft has patent licensing demands and it looks like they want the cost of Android to be a lot higher than what hardware manufacturers used to pay. On the other hand, Oracle does not want to increase the cost of Android but rather, wants to have revenue in licensing. However, the surprising thing is, Apple does not want to do either.

What Apple wants

Apple has been claiming that their IP has been breached. The company strongly believes that their iPhone designs have been copied and is used in Android phones. For example, Apple filed a lawsuit against Samsung sayong that it copied not only the design but the features of iPhone and even iPad, like the user interface.

The company argues that since they have released the older versions of iPhone, Android phones came out, looking and feeling like an iPhone. By feeling it means, same functions, same features and the feeling of using an iPhone because it’s just like one.

What should Google do?

So since Apple has a pretty strong case against Samsung and the use of Android, Google has no choice but to play the victim here. That is exactly what Google is doing right now, getting the sympathy of the people, saying it is the consumer’s friend.

Well folks, it looks like Google is staying on this track for a while.
